Four hurt as Cong, CPI-M workers clash at Iritty

Police made a lathicharge to disperse a group of Congress and CPI-M workers after they clashed at Iritty yesterday leading to tension in the area, police said.

The trouble began after an altercation involving pro-Congress Kerala Students Union and Students Federation of India at a nearby college yesterday morning spilled over to Iritty town and members of rival political parties clashed.

The Youth Congress workers called for a hartal in the town to protest the alleged attack by pro-CPI-M outfits after they barged into local party office.

As the Youth Congress men enforced closure of shops, the rival partymen resisted the move leading to clashes in which four Congress workers were injured.

The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the warring groups, police said, adding, the situation has been brought under control.
