Congress, Muslim League broker deal

NEW DELHI: Papering over their differences over the lone Rajya Sabha seat that comes to the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the coming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Kerala, the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Monday agreed on the candidature of Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony.

The stalemate was broken at a meeting between leaders of the two parties at the residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The IUML wrested an assurance from the Congress that it would get the next Rajya Sabha vacancy that falls into the UDFs kitty.

As to whether there was a written agreement to this effect, IUML State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty told The Hindu: We have a long-standing alliance with the Congress. We trust the Congress to keep its word; we do not need any written undertakings.
