Increase in milk price proposed

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Thiruvananthapuram Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union (TRCMPU) has urged the government to raise the milk price by Rs.3 a litre with a view to reviving dairy farming.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, union chairman Kallada Ramesh and managing director Baby Joseph said the hike was essential to retain the farmers in the dairy sector.

Mr. Ramesh said 83 per cent of the sales revenue of Milma went to the farmers. A sum of Rs.4 crore would be given as incentive to various cooperative societies.

The union had drawn up an action plan to boost milk production in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha by adopting 5,000 cows on a yearly basis. The scheme envisaged adoption of 25,000 cows in the next five years.

He also stressed the need to launch new schemes to increase milk production and procurement.
