Inter-locking tiles for pavements on SA Road

KOCHI: The Sahodaran Ayyappan road would be free of trenching works for at least five years. A proposal of the Kochi Corporation to lay inter-locking tiles on the pavements of the road to avoid trenching was cleared at a meeting of the State-level Empowered Committee for Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission projects held at Thiruvananthapuram yesterday The proposal was made as no cable ducts could be constructed along the road for carrying pipelines and cables of various service providers including the Kerala Water Authority and the Kerala State Electricity Board. The civic body could not find additional funds required for constructing the duct along the road. As the road is being constructed with a five-year maintenance contract, trenching would not be permitted. The inter-locking tiles can be easily removed and re-laid for laying the cables and pipelines. Tiles would be laid along the pavement at a distance of seven metres from the central median of the road on both flanks, Mercy Williams, Kochi Mayor, said.
