Kerala house adjourned after tribute to accident victims

The Kerala assembly was adjourned Wednesday after legislators paid tribute to the 11 people killed in a bus accident near Kottayam the day before.

Speaker K. Radhakrishnan moved a resolution, which was immediately accepted by the treasury and ruling benches and the house adjourned without going into any other business.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan announced that the government would decide soon on the compensation to the victims and also those injured in the accident Tuesday afternoon.

About 40 people were on their way from Shertallai to Kottayam in the bus when it hit an electric post and fell into the Meenachil river, just three kilometres from Kottayam.

Most of the passengers were tourists, who had boarded the bus from the tourist town of Kumarakom, witnesses said
