Nazir in Kerala Police custody

KANNUR: Suspected LeT operative T Nazir was Friday remanded in Kerala Polices custody in connection with placing of an explosive device close to the busy stadium complex here in September 2008.

The Kannur native was produced before a magisterial court of judge V Unnikrishnan, who remanded him in 11 days custody, police said.

Nazir had planted the explosive to stop Muslim women from coming out and shop on the occasion of Id-ul-Fitr believing it to be un-Islamic, but it did not explode, police said.

Nazir, who allegedly masterminded a network in Kerala to recruit youths for LeT, is believed to be involved in various terror-related cases in the state, including the burning of a Tamil Nadu transport bus in Kalamassery near Kochi in 2005.

Unprecedented security measures were in place as he was produced before the court here Friday evening on the basis of production warrant issued by it Thursday.
