Plan to revive Akkulam Lake

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has drawn up a Rs.30-crore project to revive Akkulam Lake and the Akkulam tourist village.

Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Sports M. Vijayakumar said here on Monday that lake would be dredged and cleared of waste as part of the plan. Protective walls would be constructed along the banks with footpaths and lighting. The Kerala Maritime Development Corporation, Travancore Cements Limited and the Inland Navigation Corporation would undertake the work which would be inaugurated on Wednesday.

In addition, the Harbour Engineering Department had tendered work for constructing two breakwaters, at a cost of Rs.12 crore, to prevent formation of sandbar at the Veli estuary after monsoon. Environment clearance is awaited for the project. The Irrigation Department is undertaking a Rs.8-crore project to clean up Amayizhanchan Thodu which drains into the lake.

Mr. Premachandran said no environmental impact study had been conducted regarding the construction of the breakwaters.
