State gets five tourism awards

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has bagged five national tourism awards in various spheres in the travel and tourism industry during 2008-2009.

The Responsible Tourism initiative introduced in Kumarakom as part of the four pilot projects taken up in Kovalam, Wayanad and Thekkady fetched Kerala the national award for the best Responsible Tourism (RT) project.

The award was received by president of Kumarakom grama panchayat G.C. Damodaran and the coordinator K. Rupesh Kumar.

The website (keralatourism.org) of Kerala Tourism developed and maintained by Invis Multimedia bagged the national award for the most innovative use of Information Technology/Website.

The Leela Kovalam Beach was conferred the national award for the best five star deluxe hotel. It is for the first time that five star hotels in the State are getting the national tourism award. Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Vivek Nair received the award.

Taj Groups Gateway Hotel in Kozhikode won the award for the best five star hotel. The award for the third best tourist transporter went to Jaysree Travels and Tour Company.
