Vilakkumthara\' restored

KANNUR: A lamp post platform here that was witness to several historical events and was found demolished seven months ago has been reconstructed.

K. Sudhakaran, MP, formally opened the newly reconstructed platform with a lamppost and paid floral tributes to the freedom movement that the structure symbolises.

The platform had been demolished on August 23 last, drawing protests from political parties and other organisations.

Vilakkumthara had been erected in 1918 by the family of the late industrialist and freedom fighter Samuel Aaron and the place where it was located is still known as Vilakkumthara Maidan though the maidan in the Cantonment area, which houses the barracks of the Defence Security Corps and the 122 Infantry Battalion of the Territorial Army, had been walled in years ago for the construction of Central School here
