Centre urged to give nod for Athirappilly project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Electricity Officers Federation has asked the Centre not to stand in the way of the implementation of the Athirappilly hydel project.

General secretary of the Federation S. Vijayan said in a statement here that the Centre should persuade the international community to take up global afforestation and not to pursue the policy of globalisation in order to check the increase in atmospheric temperature.

He said the Centre was attempting to bring monopolies into the power sector. Power projects that used harmful carbon-based fuels for generation did immense harm to the environment. The need of the hour was action to protect the environment and not mere lip service. Even the preliminary work for the construction of a dam for a hydel project led to presence of water in the river and nearby places and rejuvenated nature in the area.
