Export of coconut and coir products goes up

KOCHI: Export of Coconut and coconut products other than coir has gone to 34.19 per cent during 2009-10 fiscal, Coconut Board Chairman, Minnie Mathew, Thursday said.

Value wise the growth was 34 per cent and quantity wise 30 per cent, she told reporters here. During 2009-10, about Rs 442 crore coconut and coconut products were exported against Rs 329 crore in 2008-09, she said.

India was exporting to 84 countries with activated carbon forming a major component of the export basket worth Rs 150 crore to Rs 212 crore. Desiccated coconut, ball copra, oil cake, coconut shell and activated carbon are among the products being exported.

The coconut sector in the country has witnessed a significant growth in many areas during the past five years due to the multi pronged development activities carried out by Board, she said.
