SP\'s transfer kicks up a row

KANNUR: The transfer of District Superintendent of Police (SP) Anup Kuruvila John to Thiruvananthapuram as Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) has stirred up a controversy as it is widely seen as a violation of rules governing the transfer of police officers.

The district Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leadership is alleged to be behind Mr. Johns transfer, 10 months after he took charge here.

While the transfer is said to be politically motivated, it is alleged that the provisions of the Kerala Police (Amendment) Act 2007, which stipulates a minimum tenure of two years for police officers, including the Director-General of Police, Inspector-General of Police in charge of ranges, SPs in charge of districts, and Station House Officers, have been breached.
