Doctors in Malappuram to strike work today

Thiruvananthapuram: Doctors and hospital staff in all hospitals in Malappuram district will strike work on Wednesday in protest against the mob attack on Nadakkavu hospital at Valanchery following the death of a newborn in the hospital on Monday.

All hospital services, except emergency services, in the district will be disrupted from 6 a.m. till 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Indian Medical Association (IMA) leaders said in a statement here.

The newborn had been delivered through an emergency caesarean section on April 28. However, the baby died three days later. On Monday, the relatives of the patient and the local people unleashed large-scale violence in the hospital alleging that medical negligence led to the death of the baby. In a statement here, the IMA said that on Tuesday, a large number of people assembled on the hospital premises and forcibly vacated all in-patients and threatened to burn down the hospital.
