Ombudsman directs replanting of saplings

KOLLAM: Ombudsman for Local Self-Government Institutions M.R. Hariharan Nair has directed the city Corporation secretary to ensure that 256 saplings are planted as per a Kerala High Court order along the Asramam-Kappalandimukku road by June 1.

One hundred and twenty-eight fully grown avenue trees on either side of the road were felled last year for developing the road into a four-lane stretch under a project of the city Corporation.

Environmental activists raised strong protests and the matter was taken by them to the High Court.

The court issued orders for planting 256 saplings to compensate for the felling of the trees and ensuring that the saplings grew into trees.
