Religious discrimination alleged

KOCHI: Kummanam Rajasekharan, general secretary of the Hindu Aikya Vedi, has accused the State government of discriminating against Hindus in terms of payment of compensation to the families of pilgrims killed in accidents.

Mr. Rajasekharan said while the government paid a solatium of Rs.1 lakh each to the families of Christian victims who were killed in an accident while on a pilgrimage to Velankanni, those who were killed while on pilgrimage to Sabarimala and other religious places had not been paid any relief money at all.

This was religious discrimination, he alleged.

About 50 Sabarimala pilgrims had died in the last season, he noted and urged the government to pay Rs. 1 lakh each to their families.
