Call to provide wireless Internet at public institutions

Thiruvananthapuram: New wireless technologies and methods to dispose of the growing mountain of electronic waste were the core subjects discussed by experts participating in a day-long seminar organised in connection with the National Technology Day celebrations here on Tuesday.

The seminar Green Kerala, Smart Kerala was organised by the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, and the Kerala State IT Mission.

More than 100 participants gathered at Mascot Hotel to discuss the two related issues, and how they apply to the State.

As the government moves forward to implement a broadband system across the country, WiMAX, a 4G technology, has come to the forefront.

C.S. Rao, WiMAX country head for Intel Corporation, said the new broadband technology was three times faster, had three times more productivity and was one-third of the cost of Wi-Fi, the more common wireless network used in many countries.
