Doctors decide to defer strike

Thiruvananthapuram: The doctors, who had earlier proposed a State-wide strike on Wednesday to press for the implementation of a law to protect hospitals and doctors from mob attacks, have decided to defer their strike for the time being.

The Joint Action Council of Doctors for Hospital-Patient Protection Law, comprising doctors outfits from public and private sectors and the Indian Medical Association, decided to call off the strike temporarily following a written assurance from Health Minister P. K. Sreemathy that the government would enact a law to protect hospitals in a time-bound manner, a leader of the Joint Action Council said on Tuesday. The Council leaders had held discussions with Ms. Sreemathy on Monday, before she left on a foreign tour.

The doctors had been on a State-wide campaign demanding that the government implement a law to protect hospitals and doctors from attacks by mobs, by making such attacks a non-bailable offence.
