Fishes from cage farming harvested

KOCHI: An experimental cage culture of Asian sea bass Lates calcarifer (Kalanchi/Narimeen) and wild-collected grey mullet Mugil cephalus (Thirutha) along Moothakunnam coast, near here, under the aegis of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) over the last six months has concluded on a positive note.

Fish from the experimental cage farming was harvested on Saturday with Syda Rao, Director of the Fisheries Research Institute inaugurating the event.

The cage farming experiment was put up for demonstration of the cage culture technology developed by scientists at CMFRI, said a press release here.

The indigenous cage, with a diameter of 6 m and made of high density polyethylene material is cost-effective.

A few numbers of pearl spots Etroplus suratensis (Karimeen) were also stocked for maximum utilization of the water area in the cage.
