Hassle-free loans for students sought

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: District panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan has called upon banks to disburse education loans to all eligible students .

Inaugurating a district-level review committee meeting on banking here on Tuesday, Mr. Nagappan congratulated the banks for achieving the annual loan target of 2009-10.

George Mercier, MLA, urged banks to improve credit delivery to the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes and women and provide more banking facilities to the people in coastal areas.

N. Rajan, MLA, urged banks to conduct awareness programme on schemes for financial inclusion. J. Arundhathi, MLA, asked banks to consider disbursing loans to men self-help groups.

The meeting was informed that financial institutions in the district disbursed Rs. 4,944.44 crore under the priority sector against the target of Rs. 3,919.26 crore.

Under the agriculture sector, Rs.2,477.68 crore was disbursed against the target of Rs.1,546.44 crore; Rs.2,258.63 crore was disbursed in the service sector against the target of Rs.2,107.78 crore; and in the non-farm sector, which includes industrial credit, disbursement was to the tune of Rs.208.13 crore.
