Project to popularise ornamental fish farming

KOCHI: Ornamental fish farming is growing to the backyards of households to venture into overseas markets.

The Kerala Aqua Venture International (KAVIL), the initiative of the State government, is planning to join hands with Kudumbasree and Self Help Groups to popularise the farming of aquarium fish varieties in the State. The scope is immense given the demand. But the supply is limited and efforts are on to increase the fish production, says A. Gopalakrishnan Nair, Managing Director of KAVIL.

It requires the space of just four cents, power connection and fresh water to become an entrepreneur in ornamental fish breeding.

Though it would cost around Rs. 1 lakh to set up the unit, half of the establishment cost would come as government subsidy to the entrepreneur.
