Railway bomb detection squad starts functioning

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A bomb detection and disposal squad set up under the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Kerala has started functioning at the Thiruvananthapuram Central station here.

The squad, first of its kind in the railway network in the State, will function round-the-clock.

With this, the Railways need not depend on the State security agencies for carrying out anti-sabotage checks in the wake of bomb threats in trains or in railway installations in the capital.

The squad comprising six RPF personnel trained in handling explosives and their detection and led by an inspector had been provided with the latest bomb detection and disposal equipment.

The unit was inaugurated by Divisional Railway Manager Rajiv Dutt Sharma in the presence of Additional Railway Manager Ashok Kumar and other officials on Tuesday.
