Restrictions on holding demonstrations in city

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the police to ensure that the number of participants in a procession or a demonstration to be taken out in the Kochi city was limited to the number mentioned in the application seeking permission submitted by organisers.

The Bench comprising Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice P.S. Gopinathan also directed that the organisers should state in the application the approximate number of participants, the proposed ground and place where they would assemble. The ordered that the police commissioner should assess the seating capacity of the ground or place before issuing permission for holding demonstrations or processions.

Only the stated number of persons should be allowed to enter the place or grounds. The police could check the vehicles at the entry point to control the participants.

The court ordered that these directives be made part of the guidelines laid down by the Full Court.
