Rs.64 crore for farm development

PALAKKAD: A special action plan for the development of agriculture in the tribal villages of Attappady will be taken up under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The scheme is estimated to cost Rs.64 crore.

It will be implemented through the �oorukuttams (hamlet groups) of 154 tribal hamlets in Attappady tribal block in Mannarkkad taluk.

Under the scheme, 10,393 projects will be implemented in all the three panchayats � Pudur, Sholayur and Agali � in Attappady block.

Block programme officer P.V. Radhakrishnan said an additional amount of Rs.22 crore would be spent on irrigation and development of tribal land. Under the special action plan in Pudur grama panchayat, 4,709 projects costing Rs.28.6 crore will be implemented. In Agali grama panchayat, 3,629 projects will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.22.70 crore. In Sholayur grama panchayat, 2,055 projects estimated to cost Rs.12.29 crore will be implemented.

There are 186 tribal hamlets in Attappady consisting of 9,762 families. Ninety-seven per cent of the tribal families are registered with MGNRES, Mr. Radhakrishnan said
