State pollution control awards announced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Kochi refinery) and Binani Zinc Ltd, Ernakulam, have shared the State award for excellence in pollution control by very large industries in Kerala this year.

The award for excellence among large industries went to United Breweries, Kanjikode, Palakkad. Kochi Minerals and Rutile Ltd., Ernakulam, and Victory Granite Metal, Thrissur, won the awards for medium and small industries respectively. The Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences Ltd., Kozhikode, bagged the award for excellence among large hospitals.

Minister for Health and Social Welfare P.K. Sreemathy, who announced the awards here on Thursday, said the institutions were chosen for the awards considering their achievements in conserving environment.

She also announced prizes for industries, hospitals, hotels and local bodies for pollution control. The following are the prize winners:

Very large industries: NTPC (Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Project), Kayamkulam (first prize); Hindustan Newsprint Ltd., Kottayam (second prize); and FACT (Udyogamandal division), Ernakulam (third prize).
