At 20, Technopark chases bigger glories

Thiruvananthapuram: Technopark, the first and single-largest information technology (IT) park in India, is preparing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its foundation.

With a built-up area of 4.5-million sq.ft, the campus today houses 180 IT and IT-enabled-services companies employing 28,000 professionals.

It was in July 1990 that the State government set up the Electronics Technology Park, Kerala as an embryonic society for Technopark. The autonomous society was established to create infrastructure and provide support required for the development of high-technology companies.

The foundation stone for the first building in Technopark was laid on March 31, 1991 by the then Kerala Chief Minister, E.K. Nayanar. K.P.P. Nambiar, industrialist, was Technoparks first chairman. The campus was dedicated to the nation by the then Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, in November 1995.

Technopark has helped Kerala capitalise on its advantages and transform itself into an IT powerhouse through focussed initiatives in IT infrastructure development, HR [human resources] development and citizen e-enablement. Kerala is one of the few States that bucked the global trend and registered a phenomenal growth in IT. In the recent past, many international IT brands have moved to Technopark Thiruvananthapuram for the excellent infrastructure, 24x7 power and data connectivity.
