Crime editor arrested

Thiruvananthapuram: The State police arrested T.P. Nandakumar, editor of the Crime news magazine, in Kochi on Saturday on the charge of publishing offensive and defamatory material against a Kaduthuruthy-based Non-Resident Indian businessman.

Official sources said Mr. Nandakumar had published the allegedly defamatory material on the online edition of his magazine.

The businessman, Alexander, was fighting a defamation suit against Mr. Nandakumar in the District Sessions Court, Ernakulam.

The court had ordered Mr. Nandakumar not to publish any further news reports or material relating to Mr. Alexander till further orders. Recently,

Mr. Alexander petitioned Director-General of Police Jacob Punnoose stating that Mr. Nandakumar had published offensive material defaming him in the latest online edition of his magazine.

Mr. Punnoose ordered the cyber police to register a case and investigate the matter. The police arrested Mr. Nandakumar on the charge of violating Section 66 of the Information Technology Amendment Act, 2008.

The section carried a punishment of up to three years of imprisonment.
