Protesters block garbage-laden lorries

Kozhikode: An agitation being staged by the Njeliyanparamba Samara Munnani (agitation front) intensified on Tuesday with protesters attempting to block garbage-laden lorries of the City Corporation bound for the controversial waste-disposal yard in the area and the police intervening to break up the demonstrations.

The situation became tense as slogan-shouting protesters, including women and children, resisted the attempts to remove them. The police quickly brought the situation under control. Many demonstrators were arrested and removed.

The indefinite agitation was inaugurated by K.C. Abu, president of the District Congress Committee, on Sunday.

P.C. Rajan, president of the Cheruvannur-Nallalam panchayat, ruled by the Left Democratic Front, where the Corporation-run waste disposal yard is situated, described the agitation as a political stunt organised with an eye on the coming elections to the local bodies.
