Tree count in Kochi

KOCHI: Donning white caps and t-shirts, students of various educational institutions including engineering, social work and human resource management courses will go out on to the streets of Kochi on August 7 to take stock of its green cover.

It is estimated that around 2,000 students belonging to nine educational institutions of the Sacred Heart province of the CMI missionary congregation will cover every street of the city on Saturday as part of the tree census planned by the Kochi Corporation. For every street in the city, two students will be deputed. They will collect details regarding each tree, said Joshi Varghese, the public relations officer of the Rajagiri Outreach Centre.

The survey teams will be flagged off at four zones in the Kochi Corporation area. The student surveyors will record details of trees and plants on the streets including their species, height and girth and whether they were planted or naturally grown. The potential risks or threats faced by them and the availability of protective measures like tree guards will also be recorded.
